Yeah, I wouldn't suggest putting it in the engine bay, I have zero experience with that either, but I do know they work well when inside the car. Normally in the passenger side area or in the trunk....

You bet. I don't have the template cut for the 257mm but I do have a 3d printed piece that uses my dial calipers for a measurement at the required height.
