Apparently (based on Google translate) it's a custom front end on a Miata.

Again with the crazy conversion you'll only see in Japan. It's like the 370Z with a GT86 front end I saw at Osaka Auto Messe back in 2020 lol.

Makes sense since I always thought the S-FR was based on a Miata.

That front reminds me of The Incredible Mr. Limpet.

I think I read that it was. Toyota were pondering the possibility of a joint partnership with Mazda to use the MX-5 platform, similar to their partnership with Subaru for the twins and BMW for the Supra.

A real shame they never went past concept stage with the SF-R. Smaller and lighter is always better in a sports car (something Lotus seem to have forgotten).

I think the window for a new ICE coupe from Toyota after the GR 86 and Supra has likely passed, unless they make it a hybrid. I would love to see them build something like the SF-R or their recent FT-Se concept as an EV sports car, however. Just keep it light and small and they’d have that segment to themselves for awhile.
