CarNut Phraseology Conundrums

Why do so many folks say...

"How is the fitment?" or "The fitment is good" instead of "Does it fit?" or "It fits."

"I'm running a GoNadipus Rex Shift Knob with Alpaca Nubbies" instead of "I have a ..."

In other words, add or create unnecessary words that may or may not be used accurately just to pad the letter count...

AND THEN turn around and say .....

"Official Bazooka Install thread".... when "install" is a verb, not a noun. The word is "Installation." Granted, "install" is shorter, but we don't seem to care about that in the previous examples.

'Splain the fitment of these word installs to me, please? I be much happy if some one peoples be helper.

Some of these words bug the hell out of me until I give myself a kick for being hypocritical.
For decades I called all non stock wheels "mags" and didn't think anything of it since so did the rest of the car community.

For years I called wheels "rims" and didn't think anything of it because so did the rest of the car community.

I am sure there were dozens of other words and phrases we used that were totally wrong for the context we used them in as well. Many were abbreviations though so I guess that counts for something.

"Fitment" still bugs the crap out of me though since it seems totally made up to sound informed and knowledgeable when in fact it is not real a word in that context at all.

I hear that all the time. A "motor" is electric.

Wrong:

mo·tor.

[ˈmōdər]

NOUN

1.a machine, especially one powered by electricity or internal combustion, that supplies motive power for a vehicle or for some other device with moving parts.

en·gine.

[ˈenjən]

NOUN

1.a machine with moving parts that converts power into motion.

synonyms: motor · machine · mechanism · jet · turbojet · turboprop

They are the same thing.

'Tis the dialect of youth that dictates the now,
Forever changing as growth does allow,
The complex nature of embossing simplicity,
Creates large webs of popular complexity,
Which will be endorsed, nurtured and encouraged,
For the benefit of the emotionally discouraged,
Thus embrace or abject,
New notions of grapholect,
But remember this is a public car forum,
So keep it related to all thing petroleum.

No, not by a long shot. Brickboard.com (primarily the volvo 240 portion) was a long-time habitat of mine until I parted ways w/ my two 240s, and the folks there were quite literate. My tune remains... lol... although you're right, I've seen similar butchering of the language at other (Mazda primarily) racing enthusiast sites. Haven't spent any time on Honda-specific sites.
