how would the paperwork with the dmv work out since theres more cylinders (2JZ) than the FA20??? i heard its a long process. because getting a 2JZ down to hawaii is fairly cheap in my opinion so it seems like a reasonable choice. its just the paperwork and fabrication needed that i would be worried about.

Don't quote me on this, but I believe you are supposed to get recon if the motor you install has a different number of cylinders.

Yeah you need Recon if the engine you are swapping in has more or less cylinders than the factory motor. So swapping in an I6 into a car that was equipped with an H4 from the factory requires Recon.

1. Reconnaissance
2. Reconstruction.

In this case I'm assuming the second.

There is also recondition.
Is it just something that needs certification?

Reconstruction, it's a Hawaii thing, more specifically, the island of Oahu.

Oh that was a good post. Recon is basically a certification saying that the modifications done to your vehicle are legal. Once you get that, you can get your safety check. You cant get Safety if you dont have Recon and the Safety inspector says you need Recon. The post had pretty much all the info you need to know if you need Recon or not and how to pass.

One thing that people dont seem to know about Recon is that it doesnt transfer with the car to new owners. So if you bought a car with Recon, you need to bring it down to the Recon department to get it recertified. The Recon permit wont transfer from the previous owner to you. So if you read an ad saying the car has Recon, it doesnt really mean much.
