Its like that for pretty much any field. You'll learn more from job experience than from your classes. But having a degree opens those first doors that you need.

I learned way more in my one year working at my current job than my 4.5 years in college. But I know I wouldn't have started at this job if I didnt have my degrees or the basic foundations that those classes left me with.

Yeah, but I think it's a little different with technology jobs... because literally everything you could ever want to know is available online, and you can just teach yourself if you have the willpower. A lot of superstar programmers/startup founders/etc. are college dropouts & self-taught hackers. In programming, people who are passionate about it and who are able to teach themselves can get much farther than people who just stumble through college courses. Also, college computer science programs are really out of date. They teach very little related to modern languages & web development.

Got my BS in Business Administration with focus on accounting. Been working the past 7 years in the silicon valley for multiple companies with the most recent one being Tesla. Quit that job a few months ago to start my own business with a buddy of mine. We are due to launch in a few weeks.

AA in marketing management from De Anza College

In process: BS in Business Administration from Pacific Union College.

+1 for this school being in the back roads of Napa and my BRZ enjoying every drive. So I don't mind it here. 😁

I still think its similar to other fields. There are good and bad schools/program for every kind of subject. (I personally found value in most of my classes)

Main difference is that, yea you're right, there are a lot of start ups out there and more companies in the tech field who are willing to take on people who dont have degrees as long as they can prove they have talent.

But at the same time, all this availability of information can get to some people's heads. I've seen people who brag about how much they know about programming or cyber security. Some people BS about how they could land a six figure salary if they just dropped out right now, but yet they still stay in school.. hmmm.

They think they're always right because they read something online. Then they come in for interviews, get the answers wrong, and then flunk the interview as a whole due to their attitude and overconfidence in general.

There are lots of success stories out there for drop outs who become successful, and not only in the tech field. But you gotta think about how rare those success stories are versus how many failures you'll never hear about. Its good to have dreams, but people shouldnt delude themselves.

But really, in the end, just don't regret your choices.

Getting my BS in Accounting this year.

Going back to my first school, Ohio State to get my 150 hours to sit for the CPA. Thinking about a Economics degree or getting an MBA.

As I told a worried student of mine, I'm a high school dropout with a BA in Philosophy, and I'm doing alright.

Electrical Engineering at the New England Institute of Technology. Have a bit over a year left. Took a 4 year break in between my AS.

Hoping to land a career in the automation field and work with PLCs / Programming.

Currently a Sr. Draftsman working on submarine's electrical systems. Been doing CAD dating back to middle school and as a career for 4 years now. Unfortunately, I'm pretty much maxed out without that paperrrrrr.
