Yep. That is the hit and miss part. Most of what makes a car "collectable" is the nostalgia of people that owned or wanted to own one of that model back in the day. The WRX may go for more but it isn't necessarily because it is collected but people want to actually use the. These are not the same thing.

A low miles unmolested bugeye WRX might go for more money than expected right now. But it's still far less than what it cost new. So despite their value now, it would still have been really dumb to buy one 15 years ago and barely driven it. Between maintenance, insurance and property taxes it's still a massive financial loss for an "investment".

This comparison depends on what you want to do with the cars. The m240i will make a much better daily driver. The twins will be more fun on just about any track. These cars aren't geared towards the same type of buyers at all really so its hard to compare them. Modern day bimmers are more like supras while the twins are rx7s. They can both be great at different things, it's a matter of preference.

The best part of owning a new BMW is getting to drive all the different loaner BMWs while your own car is in the shop for warranty repairs. My favorite was the Z4 loaner.
