Always ramp up. Depending on the car, you have to trail off as your velocity decreases (aero).

After having read about how Michellin PSS's, while great street tires, don't hold up well to track sessions, what would be a good street tire that holds up well and is reasonably good for standing up and running decently on the track?

I'm looking at doing the occassional track day every few months or so, say maybe 6 times a year or less. I'm an apartment dweller and don't exactly have room for a spare set of wheels/tires, and don't want tires that the track will wear out quickly b/c they don't handle track heat cycles well.

How well do Nitto NT05's perform in 225/45R17's on a 17x8 rim? Good tire for both track and DD/corner carving?

I ran pss on my sti doing some very aggressive track days and didn't have any issues with premature wear. They wore better than most other street/track tires I've used over the years.

They also have great rain evacuation for the street.

I am not really sure what the set of dynamics were, but on my PSS tires I thought they were really sticky at first and then not so much at the end of my second track day. I suspect it was from heat cycling them but I am not really sure. That day I got them greasy twice and then they didn't feel the same in the last session. I might also have just overheated them.

Did about 8 track days on them and 20k miles, weren't worn and grip was acceptable for track use. They aren't Race Tires but for a dual purpose they were fine.

Good to note. What about NT05s, just b/c I'm curious and have heard good things about them as both a street tire and a track tire.

NT05 never really worked well on subies (not BRZ/FRS) in the past, they were great on my corvette buddy's cars but any subie guys I've seen at the track that had them said they weren't great.

Bridgestone RE11/RE11A, or Yokohama AD08R.

I'm not a fan of the NT05; they grease out early. They do, however, stay consistent once they grease out.

You probably had a combination of getting used to the tire, and severely overheating the tire, damaging the remaining rubber.

That would not surprise me. It was also the first time I ever got tires greasy (this was on my fifth ever track day, second in the BRZ).

We have ~9k miles and 4 track days on our PSS and they're still good for probably another 8-9k and maybe 3-4 more track days.

I did however chunk them a bit on my first track day by not warming them up enough before trying to put power down out of the exits.

I wish I had something to compare them to, but I'll probably go with Mike's recommendation on the AD08R next time just to compare.

Here's after 4 track days

I have AD08Rs now for my track tires (225/40R18 on 18x8.5 pf01 rims). So far I am liking them but between my skill change, rim change and now (very mild with only bolts) alignment change, I don't think I can comment on the difference between the tires. I am enjoying them though; I feel like I am getting quite a bit more traction out of them. One down side (could also have to do with the rims being 18 vs 17) is that they seem noisier than the PSS.

That "boogering up" of the rubber is pretty normal for track use isn't it? My RS-3 looked worse (more boogered up) than that after a day at buttonwillow.

Totally normal. This pic was actually taken after driving home from the track and then out to dinner, which removed a lot of the marbles that were there at the end of the track day.
