I've been trying to find a skidpad locally but no such luck. Yes, I know I can find an empty parking lot, etc.... but this looks more... fun?

Meh, it's not realistic. You want real pavement, wet or dry.

I can't fathom the level of paralyzing fear you youngsters have at turning off the silly traction control. Grow a damned pair already you momma's boys.

I freely admit I am not a good driver (as in knowing how to correct oversteer/understeer at a moment's notice). I do not want to risk my car or the public to test that on a public road. I've only been driving on a day to day basis for 2 years.....

That's why I want to hit up any closed course event (auto-x, track, etc) as much as I can to learn how to.

Gotta go catch some shut-eye.

That is the right way and very responsible. I learned drifting a 72' Opel around snowy mall parking lots when the mall was closed. You got to get out there and do it in an environment where you can push past the limit and start to feel the car out without hurting yourself or others. It's not really about you, you have the right idea, but the actual pantywaists that seriously shudder in terror at the idea of the tail end getting loose. Those bitches need to go ride the bus.

Yep, @soulreapersteve and that's OK.

Most of us really old farts learned how to "drift" ..... when drifting wasn't cool.

Take an old 1940s Chevrolet or Ford, with half bald retreads, single piston (MC) drum brakes, warn out hydrolytic shocks, 85 HP engine, down a curvy, washboarded, gravel road, with a ridge of loose gravel in the center, at night with headlights with 6 volt light bulbs ........ that is how and where we learned to ...."drift" ......

Did I mention it was snowing and it was up hill both ways ...... ?? ......

Auto-crossing ....... ahhh, yes ...... same gravel roads, except instead of orange cones, we were dodging, raccoons, possums, skunks and washed out places in the gravel roads where the streams crossed.

OK, it's ma med time ....... ZZZZZZZZZZZ

You kicked out the rear end of an Opel? How cute! Try it in a 64 Impala. A study in abject terror. I even did it on purpose once in a while.

That is extraordinarily wise. You're a smart guy, Steve.

I started driving believing I was a rally champion who just hadn't won any races yet. (Or participated, for that matter).
Everyone else on the roads drove like shrivelled old spinsters. It took me a decade of driving, and several banged up cars, to realize

1. I had (surprisingly) improved my driving skills immensely over the years.

2. I still had a lot to learn and would never be a racing talent.

3. Rally champions don't go flat out and sideways around corners on the way to the grocery store. Only stupid assholes like me do that.

Everyone else still drives like shrivelled old spinsters, though.
