BRZ ordered - wanna pull it apart?

Hi, I'm new.

I've got one of 11 BRZ's coming to my state locked-in the very first month of production.
I wanted to toss a business idea out there...

Would everyone be interested in paying $10 each to sponsor video/pics/documentation of the new BRZ being disassembled?
... if I get enough takers I'll do it.

Imagine.. knowing every detail of this thing BEFORE the dealer lots get populated... BEFORE you buy it, plan upgrades way in advance.
Anyone?

You going to disassemble the whole car? lol Must have a lot of free time on your hands.

Rampage 03-26-2012 01:36 PM

Where are you at in Ohio? I wanna watch!

hyteck9 03-26-2012 01:57 PM

yes, I'm in Ohio.

Time is money as they say. I don't have "free" time which is why I'm looking for sponsors.

I'd like to see the car do well, and getting the online community educated on the vehicle bumper to bumper early on has got to be good for everyone, right?

EvoFanatic 03-26-2012 02:00 PM

Tell you what; I'll pay you once you have done it!

skinsfn36 03-26-2012 02:10 PM

The aftermarket companies will have this pretty much torn apart in a few weeks/months. I wouldn't be too worried about it

Why be a leech?

I'm in.

powertrip 03-26-2012 02:26 PM

just buy the dealer service manual? or download it once its readily available on the interwebz?

hyteck9 03-26-2012 02:28 PM

If I get enough initial interest on the forums i'd launch a kickstarter project. (individuals would commit their $10, but don't actually get charged until enough participants signup to make the thing worthwhile.)

I know the information will eventually be available and consumable, I'm just trying to fast track it.

$35 for 72 hour access. Bargain considering the price for a printed manual.

For real, generally these things start popping up as .PDF versions floating around in a few month and everyone and their brother can get it. I personally prefer to source them legit, but wouldnt pay more than ~$100 for a tech manual.

Way better info in these anyways. Tells you what tools you need and exact part numbers etc. No better source for info.

Dave-ROR 03-26-2012 02:37 PM

I was wondering if we could get printed manuals. I have full access to Honda manuals and printed ones as well, so not having access to a Subaru one sucks.

However, pics of a disassembled BRZ are worthless to me. I couldn't care less to see that. I only want torque specs and diagnostics.

I believe you can order them; I've seen them in person before.

That said, all of my .pdf manuals from 2002-2009 were obtained...extra-legally.

:) My access to Honda ones is 100% legal (sponsored race car) and my print ones I purchased. I fully support purchasing them as I like having the paper books in the garage so I don't need to deal with searching a PDF and crap. Honda's online system is nice since you can search for and find whatever you need, I'd imagine techinfo.subaru is like that as well, but I can't do that price. Unless I can get a login to use from an employee than a print manual is well worth the cost to me.

$10 to help someone pay for his BRZ to see them take it apart isn't.

DyoGTS 03-26-2012 02:49 PM

Do you have any examples of previous teardowns that you may have done?

NERO 03-26-2012 02:53 PM

If you planned on recording it and placing it on youtube I would pay. I plan on buying the manuel anyway, but it would be nice to watch someone work through it.

Turbowned 03-26-2012 02:54 PM

So you want to void your warranty right off the bat? Seems legit :iono:

hyteck9 03-26-2012 03:00 PM

So, I know this is kind of a new idea. Maybe a good one, maybe not. I just know there are always a million questions that go out to the guys that manage to reserve a car early and why not just have one person with one car that is the guinea pig that everyone can go too. (what do the stock wheels/tires weigh together?) it says 5 1/4 door speakers but could 6.5" fit? (fictional example only) etc. etc..

Not everything is in the books. But OK,. if its a dumb idea then its dumb. :/

Longhorn248 03-26-2012 03:12 PM

I'd be willing to donate if you'd do requests of certain things I'd like to see taken apart before I do. It'd be nice to know what not to pull on when disassembling so a tab isn't snapped off. I'm hoping I can get my hands on a service manual earlier rather than later.

djdnz 03-26-2012 03:15 PM

Bad idea, you'll get bored of doing it after a few components I'm sure. Not to mention, doing a write up is a lot more work than it seems, particularly one that is useful to others.

I say leave it to the people who make repair manuals and save your time.

Tainen 03-26-2012 03:54 PM

I'm having a local fab shop take the car for a week to fab up custom exhaust/intake and other parts... they get the time to create designs, and they give me free parts in exchange, and pictures of the entire process. :P

And of course, I'm only one of probably dozens that will have their BRZ apart within the first week. No need to pay for it.

The aftermarket was already invited to an event where they took apart the car and took all measurements needed. Even audio aftermarket companies. I appreciate what you're doing, but I believe all crucial information will be out there already. So just use your free time to enjoy driving them instead!

That has more to do with tools/hamfistedness. So many tabs I've broken...

neutron256 03-26-2012 07:20 PM

How many people and how much much money are you expecting to raise for this? Not that I'll be contributing, but I'm curious how much it would take to make it worth while for someone to dissect their brand new car.

hyteck9 03-27-2012 09:23 AM

All good points. I have had more offers just to come watch vs. pics/vids/docs/stl's. I guess folks just want to put their hands on the real thing.
... which...
gives me a much more exciting and EVIL idea. http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/imag...es/biggrin.gif

So taking apart your car voids the warranty??

I seriously doubt that.

If it's a true defect I'm sure the warranty still applies. The question is how do you prove it's truly a defect and not some problem caused by some fool completely dissembling his car and not putting it back together correctly.
