New Car... Couldn't wait for Toyota

Hey guys,

It's been a while since I've been on this forum. I could no longer wait for Toyota to release the FT-86, so when I graduated college I went out and replaced my crappy Cavalier. Don't worry, I still dig the FT-86 a lot, such a beautiful car! Nevertheless, I picked up my Genesis Coupe in October and am loving it! So I decided its about time to share some pics and start talking on the FT-86 board again. Enjoy!

Car: Hyundai Genesis Coupe 3.8 - Silverstone Silver
Mods: Not much yet, other than a K&N filter, Strut Brace, and some LED footwell lighting. Getting some CF pieces soon + reflash, CF SRI, Luxon Sway Braces, Rims/tires, exhaust... basically the bolt on works!

Mind the winter tires/rims, its cold here now.

was there something wrong with your old car?

Or you just wanted a new car and couldn't wait, lol.

RWDJunkie 12-13-2010 03:18 AM

Interesting. Glad you're enjoying it. :)
Weird choice on the wheels to be honest. I mean, it doesn't seem like much of an upgrade to me.

im guessing he didnt want to spend too much on a set of wheels for his winter tires that's all.

either way congrats on the genesis its a slick car!

Lol, you got it man. Its winter and snowy here so I picked up some Hankook iPikes on 17s. Skinnier tire with a taller sidewall for the winter. They are just cheap alloy rims.

For summer rims I'm looking at 275/35 19 in the rear and 245/35 19s in the front, not sure on rims yet so can't decide offset, but they gotta be tight!

Yeah, my old car wasn't gonna make it through winter, needed too much work to justify keeping it for another year. So I put it down, and bought my GC.

Can't wait till spring to start some modding and perhaps some lapping at the local track!

ryude 12-13-2010 08:06 PM

Hey congrats on the new car. I know a few people with GC's and they look so bland until you mod the car. Anyway, I hope the car keeps you happy :)

Wheels and coilovers make all the difference...

NESW20 12-14-2010 01:04 AM

sway braces? seriously?

There we go! That's the answer to the question I was going to ask next. I was going to ask why you didn't just buy winter tires for the stock wheels. It's all good.

FYI: I'm not used to the cold, so I have no winter knowledge. So for me, there are no stupid questions regarding anything winter related. :happy0180:

Yes indeed sway braces, they just look cool + there's nothing wrong with increased stiffness (that what she said!). For example (from a fellow GenCoupe member):

http://i301.photobucket.com/albums/n...o/IMG_0676.jpg

Picture those, but Kawasaki Green, to match the strut brace. Its actually a pretty cheap mod to do, less than $300 I believe.

As for that picture in the previous post, yeah thats a pretty good stance. I'm not a fan of the "hella flush" look with excessive camber. But I do believe a drop is necessary when putting bigger fatter tires on, keeps that ugly wheelgap at bay lol.

Thanks for the kind words though!

That's not hella flush, it's just 1.5" D2 Coilovers.

Yep, sorry I meant I don't like "hella flush" in general, not stipulating that the GC pictured was like such lol. I would like a setup like what is pictured, nothing excessive, just good looking.

RWDJunkie 12-14-2010 11:22 PM

Nice. I like the fitment and stance on the gray one as well. Are those 18"s? I don't think those wheels particularly suit the car though.

Sidenote: I've only seen 2 of these cars attempt the Hella Flush look anyways, and they're both from Florida.

Actually, other than the carbon fiber, I think that's the perfect GC setup. The wheels could be a little better, but overall it looks great and is still a good daily driver since it isn't too low.

Here's the mod list for that GC I posted:

Tein S-Tech Lowering Springs
XXR 521 Wheels 18x8.5 Fronts 18x10 Rears

A sway bar brace provides one or more diagonal members designed to resist horizontal forces. Hence, it reduces body flex when cornering hard.

yeah, i had to google them. seem kind of :iono: to me. i can think of numerous other places where the money would be more useful before getting those.

ryude 12-15-2010 04:03 AM

As said before, it's a common piece used for car shows. It is for aesthetics mostly, not worth the money otherwise.

BootpTraphik 12-15-2010 05:36 PM

Lol, as I said yeah, sway braces basically for looks, but they are not that expensive or hard to install.

Where is that GC from anyways? The tire size is basically what I was looking for, the rims are ok, but not my first choice. I've got some CF parts coming soon, but mostly interior/engine bay stuff. I'm not a big fan of CF hoods or trunks. A CF wrapped GT wing would be nice, or fog light surrounds. That grill is nice too.

I really like Konig's, they have lots of good styles if you can swallow the price. Like these:

http://www.konigwheels.com/core/medi...7b726f39062e0b

or these

http://www.konigwheels.com/core/medi...9b9405f6a9d99f

but I haven't made my mind up yet, its still a long way away. I just got the car in october so right now I am just saving up for mods and getting the dreams going in my head. I most definitely want a true dual cat back exhaust from Stillen, and if VTengineering creates a CF SRI I will hop on that as well, or just get an AEM CAI. I've got a reflash coming in the spring as well. But all this takes money so, time to work overtime!

I like the style of the second one, but the color might clash with your car's color. It really is up to you though, so my opinion is hardly something you should take into consideration.

The only wheels that should be considered are the....Enkei RPF1's in 18x9.5

BoostJunkie 12-16-2010 11:04 AM

GL, I knows it's a big leap forward, but it's still a hundai, not hating, just hope it lasts and gives you the power you want, very clean looking if that's the look your going for

This is the only picture I could find of a GC rocking those.

hyundai reliability... but they make a sweet RWD!

ryude 12-17-2010 01:17 AM

Reputation aside, what proof do you have that Hyundai produces a bad car?

Dimman 12-17-2010 03:01 AM

Referring to this as a GC is kind of pissing me off. GC is for 1st gen Imprezas, dammit!

How 'bout someone finds out what Hyundai's chassis code for this thing is and then called it by that? Then you could be KDM, yo!

GC = GenCoupe, referring to the forum gencoupe.com.

Non. They just fell victim to the "Korea makes crappy cars" stereotype. But I've never known any Hyundai owners to really complain about their vehicle. Most Hyundai owners love their cars.

Also, Wikipedia says it's a "BK platform code". But that makes me think of Burger King. :P

Lol, nice platform code!

But ya, my friend owned a Hyundai Tiburon and blew the motor like 3 times. They replaced it every single time without question, even though he had installed a turbo kit and some other things.

My Kia has a 10 yr/100k mile warranty and that's the main reason I bought it. Only thing that has went wrong with it is the horn, not sure what's up with that but I need to get it fixed.

I had two buddies that were stationed with me I'n AR, they each had hyundai's and both were brand new and fell apart, the engine IMO was a waste, I mean really who builds a V6 that has less HP then a civic......

The same people that made a 2.0L Direct Injected Turbocharged 4 cylinder producing 274 hp on 87 octane. What has Toyota or Honda built these last 5+ years?

Honda has built the K20 series which are fantastic engines and when turbo'd you get great amounts more of power, and as for Toyota I'll give you that, they have been slacking but good stuff is on it's way, FT..... Granted I know it's a scooby engine, how about 2jz....1jz.... Yes I know they need to pick it back up, but we will see

I'm not dissing, I'm just saying at least Hyundai is trying. When a company rests on it's laurels (Toyota), it doesn't take long before competition matches or even exceeds them.

I'm not saying they arnt trying, they are and I applaud them for that, but I'm just saying I'n the same sence as they are building good power I hope it's built well and not cheaply, because everyone can make power fairly cheaply but that dosnt mean that it was built well, just hope there car lasts, that's all I'm saying

BootpTraphik 12-17-2010 06:46 PM

Lol, I always refer to Genesis Coupes as GC's, but yes, they are BKs.

As for reliability, there are always good and bad stories about Hyundai reliability, but that goes for a lot of car companies. In the last few years the company (Hyundai) has made great strides in quality and engineering. They have made more changes and innovations that many other companies out there and were one of three companies to actually increase sales during the economic downturn. Not to mention, the companies we all supposedly trust for best reliability and safety are the ones starting to really fall behind. Now, true they sell the most cars, but % wise, how much more reliable are they than Kia or Hyundai? For example, from Car and Driver:

http://www.caranddriver.com/var/ezfl...010_inset2.jpg

Now, take that with a grain of salt, but just goes to show how the big companies are having issues keeping up with product development.

http://www.mycarstats.com/reports/recalls.aspx

Take a gander at this site, pretty much sums all recalls up by model. Now, that being said, just because a car has no recalls does not mean that the model in question has no issues. Just food for thought, I'm glad that I have started some convo on this forum. Keeps us busy while we wait for news for Toyota.

ryude 12-18-2010 01:14 AM

^^ Here here, sometimes these types of conversations will keep you entertained for a long time and before you know it ft-86 info will show up :)

Now did you know that Hyundai is one of only 3 manufacturers to design it's own 6 speed automatic? Did you also know that the engine block inside the Mitsubishi Evo X, Caliber SRT-4, and the Genesis Coupe Turbo are all made & designed by Hyundai?
