It's because the people I play with put me in matchmaking way out of my league, and I think even on top of that if you queue as a group it puts you into a higher difficulty as well. I've been doing substantially better going in solo, and have my Thorn quest to 80 after a few games now.

I noticed this in halo as well, seems if you're in a party of 3-4 people they pit you against another group of 3-4 people and then fill in the randoms. The problem is that the other group is usually a PVP clan and you get massacred. I always had more wins playing alone even though it's more boring.
