Ok, cool, err hot I guess

Reading about JR SC'ed engines hitting 245 in hotter weather yet got me a little worried. This last weekend was my first time getting really good data logging.

JR NA OC is the same size as FI. The brackets and lines are different. Max oil temp at 235ºF is actually very impressive. We have seen instances of potential 300ºF without oil cooler. This is very dangerous for the engine.

Perrin Oil Cooler uses a 6-series Setrab cooler I believe and the Jackson Racing uses a 9-series 15 row Setrab cooler. JR's setup has the largest volume oil cooler kit available on the market right now. The 6-series is rated to ~200HP and the 9-series is rated to around ~310HP. The ratings obviously have a safety factory built into it so it's a guideline, not an absolute.

We've hit higher than that, but know exactly what to do to bring the temperatures down further. It just goes to show that the oil cooler is a necessity with boost and/or tracking.

Larger is nice for cooling, but remember, too large means potentially too large of a pressure drop which is bad for the lubrication system. Larger Setrab oil cooler may require an external oil pump to maintain oil pressure and you may need to consider stronger/larger fans to pull air through the fins for proper cooling. Everything is a balancing act.

235 is totally solid.

If you look at the 9-series coolers which is what jackson racing use i believe, they use the 15 row, im thinking to step 1 size up to the 20 row, i would rather piece together a kit because it is much cheaper shipping wise, i can get a setrab cooler from a local dealer and all lines other than the mocal thermostatic plate can be done locally. If im not mistaken the pressure drop on the 20 row oil cooler is less than on the 15 row, and its dimension are decent

We've discussed using that too...

The 20-row is kind of the last resort before going custom (uber pricey). Since you have a relatively custom setup, don't forget to get some strong fans and vented hood to help improve the cooling efficiency!

@CSG David Is there a plan to offer more cooling for the JRSC given the high oil temps you've seen even with their current oil cooler? Their claim is that the current cooler keeps temps below 245F, but it seems that is a bit optimistic; yes?

Mind elaborating on this one? Or is it a secret?

We've actually hit 270ºF with the JROC kit. That's not to say that it's not working, but rather the mere fact that anything else will be yielding much higher oil temperatures. We also get the temperature that high by purposely driving behind cars (drafting), going to tracks that have ~110ºF OAT and minimal time for air to flow through the heat exchangers.

Keep in mind we are running a prototype radiator so the fin density is higher thus potentially providing too large of a restriction for air to pass through efficiently. We will look into a fan setup before going vented hood to collect more data on each setup and their effectiveness.

No secrets; just common sense. High powered fans and vented hood along with the mentioned setup we're using. Aftermarket radiator isn't necessary for our application, but we did it for the sake of data and science.

270F is not a big deal; I got the impression you hit higher.

Yes, I'm monitoring tracked FI kits for the possible future upgrade

Yea...it's not ideal, but you get the idea. Below 245ºF oil temp would be better obviously, and it's not hard to hit.

Great info here guys.

Subscribed for info and to add our results data...

So far we have for tracking our car in 75-85 ambient:

Stock:
Coolant- 215-217
Oil- 265-275

Modified:
Koyo Rad- 198-205
Oil- 265-275

We would like to see 215-220 on the oil temps.

Testing the OEM WRX 2015 cooler first, then on to OTS coolers and eventually probably a custom setup.

This is running 1:20-1:21 at NJMP Lightning course.

We hit 270F without the OC, with only the SC on. Peak I have in our logs is 251F in 113F ambient, after 5 laps.

Interesting as it is common to hit 270F stock ...
