As someone who hasn't seen the car or planning to buy it anytime, I wish they brought lower spec, more affordable options to the US. I'd very much like basic radio system, no GPS nav, no stainless steel and leather pieces, maybe even the open diff, and DEFINITELY the 16" wheels, which look better than the 17"s anyday. I hate to say but even for people who are well off, if you're in your 20s you might not want to dump 25k on a car. You might say, well these options only cut like 1-2k off the car, but getting the price tag a little closer to a Civic or whatever makes it a more comfortable buy especially if you're say, a graduate student living on ~20-25k stipend, and are digging into your savings to get a car.

Definitely feel like they kinda missed the affordability mark, but it's understandable.
You need to understand how this joint venture is being marketed in USA. First of all, Toyota is forking the most money on this project which means? Toyota has more control, which means.. There will be more FR-S's made, and THAT will be the cheap car for the masses. The Subie is more "limited" (no pun intended). This is the only reason why you see a Nav. system even on the premium, its part of the differentiation from both cars.

While we are on that note, Toyota put the Scion badge on the 86 for USA, to try and jumpstart Scion, that's it. A LOT of people wouldn't have ever considered a Scion and with he FR-S now that has changed.

I wish the BRZ had a separate radio with hardware buttons. The combined radio/nav touchscreen has software bugs. I was messing with one the other day and got the radio menu to cover half of the GPS options screen and had to restart the unit because I could not access the GPS options. And it simply does not respond as quickly as hardware buttons would.

If the FR-S were offered in World Rally Blue, I'd probably get one. And the FR-S' traditional radio has the better user experience. I'm willing to give up navigation and digital climate controls for a traditional radio. But I'd pick WRB paint over a hardware radio so BRZ still wins. :P

Thanks, but the only thing I missed was the nav system that the FRS doesn't have. It (the FRS) still, however, has the rest of the "luxury" features I described, 17" wheels, "premium" 8 speaker sound system, premium trim bits everywhere, LSD, etc. I am saying that downgrading those components could knock a little more off the price and make it more accessible as an entry level car, and in Japan they have the option to forgo these things, which apparently knocks a huge chunk off the price tag. Sure, the market for a stripped down car might be small, but it would certainly be nice to have a more basic trim available. Considering that the focus of the car is about the driving, not amenities, I think downgraded stereo and such makes even more sense.
