Painter's tape
Hey guys, I'm going to be making a very (very, very) long drive to bring my BRZ home and I'm planning on covering the front end in painter's tape to try and prevent chipping. I've done this before for autocross so I'm not really worried about the tape itself, but I am concerned about rain. My question is whether this stuff will hold up when the skies decide to let loose on me at some point during my 20 hour adventure. Anyone have any experience with this?

I drove from Ft Hood Texas (just north of austin)to Aberdeen md with painters tape on my car, I hit some pretty bad storms in Atl and NC. The tape made it the whole way, it did come lose in a few spots, from wind not rain. I just keep an extra roll in the car

Should be okay. The tape is designed to not let paint through so I doubt rain will make it come loose.

I can't say I've had any experience with the stuff on cars, but my guess would be that it wouldn't survive too long if it was left sitting in the rain for an extended period. At highway speeds, you might be able to get away with it since the water wouldn't have time to soak, and you're moving at a pretty good clip...but, this is all in theory, of course.

Nice, glad to hear that it should hold up. I've already planned ahead and picked up an extra roll so I think I'm good to go in that respect, I just didn't want to risk the whole hood full of tape flying up into my windshield when things get rainy.

Also stop by a sign shop or sticker shop, they may have the same plastic wrap that cars are delivered in for cheap that you could apply yourself.

Should be fine as long as you don't cheap out for the brandless tapes because they could leave an annoying residue.

Well, I got it finished up. My car is now an eyesore but at least it should be chip-free once I get up north. Thanks again guys!

Just get two cans of plastidip and dip the front, seems way easier/better and faster to clean up after than tape.
