Funny, saw one at the LA auto show years ago, the rear door wasn't even aligned properly. It was so blatant I can't believe that both the factory and then again the dealer completely missed the obvious and brought it to an international car show. Amazing quality control...

Ordered a Mk7 Golf R 5 Door for my wife about a week ago. In oryx white with leather.

Will make a nice "family car".

A four month wait for it. Dealer hasn't got a demo yet, that arrives in a few weeks. We test drove the GTI with performance pack but at about US$4k more decided to chase the bigger HP number of the R.

Not sure where our RHD ones are made but unlikely to be Mexico as I think they specialise in LHD. I think ours are still made in Germany.

The Golf R was about 20% cheaper than the Audi S3 for the same HP. We did test drive the Subaru WRX and was considering the STI but wife decided she was ten years too old to drive one even though I told her we could get rid of the huge wing.

Wife has her race suit ready and is keen to hit the track. 0-100kph in 4.9s will likely mean she will destroy me on track. It will be very interesting.

Haha reminds me of this line from a Scirocco review:

Volkswagen sells us a car called the Golf. You've heard of it. In Europe, they sell a sleeker, sexier, less useful version called the Scirocco. It does everything a Golf does, just worse. Which makes it better.

Funny. People are trying too hard to be Clarkson, though. They should try to be Jason Cammisa. He's a better writer and a better driver.

I have seen some older Sciroccos around. Never was impressed. Never felt the urge to look twice or even once. The newest version is equally blah. I'd much rather have a GTI.

Yep. That's what I am kind of worried about and got my mk6 instead of the mk7 gti.

German engineers/manufacturing plants have a stereotype of being extremely clean and OCD about details.

Actually most of the VWs built in Mexico have a higher relaibility than their German built counter-parts.

Are they too cheap to make a new axle back exhaust for the Mk7 Golf R and just used the ones from a TT? Entire car looks hideous compare to a Mk4 R32.

Why do you think they are "cheap" when they are using Audi TT exhaust for VW Golf R?

And I don't think they are the same.

I had a Mk5 Golf GTI Fahrenheit for 6.5 years and it was the most unreliable car I've ever owned. Every month or two it will have some sort of problem either mechanically or electrically. I guess I was unlucky. The PQ35 chassis subframe problem with the under torque spec bolts was the last straw.

VW decontenting and always trying to save 2 cents on something really disgusts me.

Fingers crossed that's two models and a number of years ago so my mk7 won't have those probs.

I had a VR6 VW Corrado, and the reliability on that car was rediculious. Door handles constantly breaking off. Literally needed new $150 door handles ever ~2 years. Climbing in through the trunk because doors don't open gets old. Sunroof broke, all plastic broke, plus all the mechanical parts breaking was ridiculous. Had a friend with a Mk4 Golf. Got new tires on it, and when they lowered it down (gently) the rear axel broke in half. I'll never buy German again. Everyone I know with BMW, Mercedes, Audi, and VW have lots of problems.

Seriously...German cars have major reliability issues. Mercedes, BMW, Audi, VW, etc.

Jesus Christ....LOL

Hey, thanks for your information. Now I am thinking about either EVO X or 15 STI. I am disappointed with the old EJ25....but the upgrades on the STI is Huge....

I wonder if it could handle better than EVO X. I know it is roomier, and I need that for a Family Dad Sport car.

Had a friend with a Jetta that had to climb in through rear passenger door because it's the only one of four that wasn't broken. Had another friend with a 2004 Jetta that required an engine swap after 1yr for a thrown rod. Historically VW's have shitty reliability, hence their low resale value. That's why Toyota typically has highest resale value, due to their perceived reliability.

Don't get me wrong...I love everything about the Golf R on paper. But personal experience and through people I know, never again will I make the mistake of buying German.
