Not that I know of. I'm hoping that the person who actually talked to them will chime in at some point.

They had it for sale at the FormulaD event didn't they? I know they had them in their booth, but maybe that was just a sample. It did have the 4WD chassis.

Oh and like most RC cars the proportions were wrong. It was too wide because of the Chassis.

RC cars require AWD to drift properly. The shrunken down size and weight of RC means it doesn't behave the same as real life cars.
Pshhh really? then how is this possible...

The key to RWD RC drifting is actually knowing how to tune a drift car. People running crazy CS setups say it's a very similar feel to RWD drifting.

Ok you've found an example to prove me sort of wrong.

The fact that most RC cars don't behave like real cars still applies. Notice that he requires "crazy" setups and also modification of the RC car to mimic the actual design of RL cars. The most obvious is the need to place the motor in front of the front axle. Most RC cars have most of their components placed between the axles, keeping the mass very close to the center. So with this kind of design, there isn't enough momentum at the front to keep the drift going, which is why the front wheels require some power to hold a drift. So unless HPI designs a chassis specifically for the purpose of drifting with Rwd, it will have awd.

I'm positive HPi won't be making them for a while, but placing the motor in front of the axle is NOT necessary, there are many RWD drift setups that have the motor behind the front axle, but close to it. Steering servos however can be placed in front of the axle, and help with the distribution.

What really matters in a RWD RC drift car is:

1. weight distribution (60/40 is ideal)
2. steering lock (70+ degrees almost a requirement)
3. caster and camber (caster is non adjustable, requires modification or custom setup)
4. throttle response (something nitro rcs don't have)
5. the right tires (preference really, but some RWD setups are on rubber tires, not abs plastic like the 4wd.)

Considering the amount of custom work required, many 4wd drifters just say it's impossible, when in reality it just requires a bit of modding and a lot of skill.

Anyway, I'm sure it'll catch on, just give it some time. One thing's for sure though; the people who have done it are happy with the results, and it's one step closer to real scale drifting.

edit: just re watched the vid, and I'm not sure if you are aware, but the motor is close to the rear axle in the car in the vid, further proving my point. His car is completely stock with the addition of a metal lock to aid the weight distribution problem of the stock car.

I don't know. I didn't actually go to their tent.

Looks like you're correct. I've mistaken the object over the front axle as the motor, but in fact it is still in the middle.

Tamiya already has 2 'Toyota 86' versions of RC cars out on the market. One is based on the entry level TT01 chassis and the other is the more advanced TA06 chassis which can be set up for counter steer drift.

I already have a HPI Sprint2 Flux chassis with a mustang body and just bought myself a clear 86 body shell to paint pearl white as a miniature version of my ordered 86 till it arrives
