Turbo blankets - do they help?

Hey guys,

just wanted to hear your opinion on turbo blankets. Does it improve spool and power besides lowering underhood temps? Any downside?

Which one fits the AVO turbo?

I bought a used kit and it came with one so I don't know the difference, but I can hold the blanket after even hard driving so it definitely lowers temps. Spool and power I'm not so sure about. Downside is if you get any oil on it it's basically no longer usable since it's a fire hazard. Also the AVO is a low mounted turbo so water can get to it easier. If your turbo isn't coated and water gets on the blanket, it holds water near the turbo and with the heat and cooling cycles can accelerate rusting the turbo.

PTP Lava blanket. Which one fits your turbo depends specifically on what turbo you have.

You can get the DEI turbo blanket. I have it on my AVO kit. Link below. The T25/T28 fits along with the T3. T3 fits a bit bigger.

Having worked on a factory turbo car that some moron removed the heat shields on... If you value anything and everything plastic and rubber that is anywhere near that turbo, you'll run a blanket.

Nothing like having to spend a grand on a wiring harness and sensors because all the connections crumbled...

I run a DEI Titanium on my car and love it, you can just about touch it after a hard drive. It also makes your turbo look bigger and isn't that what every guys wants.

I hear people talk about them being an oil soaked fire hazard, um if you have that much oil leaking out you have a fire hazard as it is and should fix that.

Also the DEI on my car now is actually from my old STI, it held up great over the years. I was able to just put it right on the BRZ.

Hotter exhaust gases will have a faster flow velocity. That could lead to better scavenging, and faster spool. But I doubt the effect of insulating such a small section would actually give measureable gains.

Its more about the lower intake temps than anything else. Without one (if it it located in the right spot) will heat up the intake pipe and thus the intake air.
