Are you sure you understood them correctly .. ??

I understand that most auto dealerships would choose to replace transmissions, rather than to rebuild them ......

Last time I took my car to the dealership was because the TOB was going out, and I mentioned the grinding noise to the service guy, he ended up telling me they couldn't replicate the sound and I left it at that.

So I left the car at the dealership and they said maybe the grinding at low rpms was caused by a bad clutch 🤔

This specific low rpm "grinding," is this when shifting into gear, or is it just rolling on the throttle?

Yes she said they would replace the synchros and not the transmission. I'm a little worried about the whole procedure tbh...

They did, but they also took it for a drive to confirm the problem.

Well, xZAMx ...... not to worry. If the dealership figures they can rebuild the transmission (replace the synchros), I'd figure they would know how to put it back together.

Rebuilding a manual transmission is not rocket science ....... even ol humfrz has done that ..... back-in-the-day........

Well that makes me feel a little bit better =). I still have ~1.75 years left on the PT warranty so if anything happens, they'll be cleaning up their own mess.

It happens when I put it on first and give it gas, it grinds until 1.5k rpms then stops. It started happening after they replaced the throwout bearing.

Oh, jeez, I went back and reviewed. Did you ever have the fluid level checked?

That's not grind. That's gearbox rattle from the engine lugging.

I didn't get to check transmission fluid. So I'm driving the wrong way? The car didn't make that sound before the TOB was replaced though, it started AFTER it was replaced.

If I want to avoid that grinding/rattling sound I have to get it up to 2.5k-3k rpms before releasing the clutch. Before the TOB was replaced I used to get it to 1.5k and slowly release the clutch.

Oh and this is from neutral to 1st we're talking.

Ya know, Terruko, I've found out, over the past 70 years of driving things that have mechanical parts that are lubricated, that if those parts start acting up or making noise, the first thing to do is check to see if they are properly lubricated.

In other words ....... I suggest (again) that you check the transmission oil level ....... get it .....??

I'm not sure of anything at this point. I see what you mean about starting out in first. Maybe it's clutch chatter?

Like humfrz said. Have the fluid checked. Show them the grind/chatter. Do that first.

After that, if you can make/post a recording, I'd be glad to give it a listen. Beats spitting into the wind.

edit: oh, I see you posted earlier. New transmission. Good.
