the atom is a road car, and it is a production car, and its a NA v8 over 100 hp per liter, i just thought the H16 was cool because we have a boxer motor too

They make like 25 a year, I don't think that counts. The engine is close enough to one off at 30000 dollars or whatever. I think you probably could machine your own crankcase, crankshaft, cams, and wire up an ECU for less than 30k.

its 30k for the motor and 20k for the transmission

its been an after thought to put that engine in a FRS, when i get around to it ill make a build thread

I'll decree that the Ariel Atom squeezes in just under the wire - it's road legal, if only barely, and it's a way cool machine :happy0180:

Indeed! Getting somewhat off topic here, if you ever want to get completely blown away by feats that were possible 50, 60, 70 and more years ago, visit the Smithsonian Air and Space museum in D.C. They have rows and rows of engines (some cut in half for display so you can see inside) that span several decades of military aircraft. You can see before your eyes how piston engines were taken to the very limit of what's possible in terms of power output (and almost beyond) and how they then quickly gave way to a new approach in the form of turbine engines. The last of the reciprocating engines were as bizarre as they were problem-ridden, and several prototypes were scrapped after huge and costly R&D effort when the advent of turbine engines revealed that the old model had become a lost cause.

Hmmm... I thought they saw to it that it was legal in the US by the narrowest possibly hair's breadth, but now you're making me doubt. Lemme see what I can find. Or does anyone else know for sure?


edit: ok found some info. Seems there's a US-legal version of it called the Atom 2, and it's also available as a kit which can be registered for those willing and able to brave a bureaucratic ordeal.

This is the Atom 2, the U.S. version of the Ariel Atom first produced in England by the Ariel Motor Company. Atom 2s are street-legal, track-day sports cars produced by Brammo, Inc. of Ashland, Oregon, an official Ariel Atom licensee.

Does it have to be a car? Just about every modern sport bike qualifies. For example, My stock 06 GSXR 750 puts 125 to the wheel.
