Well a chain is NOT a maintenance free item...they just happen to have a lifespan that is like double or triple that of a belt....

You just dont have to change them out nearly as often. heck you may never get a chance to change it out before its supposely gonna go bad on you. With a belt you're likely seeing at least one change in the same interval.

Both are obviously subject to premature failure due to things like shoddy construction, faulty construction, crap materials, etc.

My point exactly. If I'm going in there to swap out chain, sprockets, and guides, they'll only be part of a much longer shopping list.

Question stands.
All Porsche 944 models: New timing belt at 30K, adjust at 15K. Big trouble if you don't. Not as bad on other cars, but undesirable com[pared to chains. I've been told that the Gates Rubber Company has a lot of pull with car manufacturers.

They used to have a lot of pull in the synchronous belt industry, in the last 5-7 years a lot of other companies have caught and some have surpassed them. We use synchronous belts as a primary drive in the majority of our equipment and go through thousands a year. For a while I was testing 5-6 different belts a year. We ran Gates exclusively for 15+ years, not anymore. They are maybe 3rd, 4th best on the market out of the dozen or so I have tested. Gates also has a lot of government contracts that take priority, so the last few years they really pissed off a lot of OEM's. I switched two years ago, haven't looked back.
