Would You Buy it? Why or Why Not?

Okay, this car has been for sale for a long time on this forum (maybe it is no longer for sale, user hasn't logged in for nearly a year now, but in some ways it doesn't matter, as this question is somewhat hypothetical)..

From the description, it reads pretty much like an 'ultimate' first gen street car. All premium parts, tuned by Bill at Delicious, etc, etc..

So why didn't it sell? Was the asking price too high? I know you never get the price of mods back, but this think has a claimed $40K in mods (seems believable to me). The only thing puzzling is that the Clutch was not upgraded along with all the other mods.

Mileage is a little high, but not excessive. Did people see it in person and see something that you can't see in the ad? Or am I missing something else that makes people familiar with this platform steer clear?

It is not my first choice of color, but damn it seems VERY WELL and tastefully built. Would I be a fool to consider purchasing it as a weekend fun car? Is it likely to be a reliability nightmare?

https://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=147885

Let me hear the good/bad/ugly opinions from those experienced with this platform..

Honestly, if the OP hasn't logged on in over a year, don't you think it's likely sold?

The problem with modded cars, is mods are very user specific. He may have spent 40k in mods, but all the interior, exterior, audio stuff even in a DD is stuff I don't care about so what he spent on them is pointless to me when discussing vehicle value.

I don't understand what you mean by this.

I agree with above, car probably sold. Dude never came back to mark ad as sold.

I meant to say clutch, as 300 whp seems a bit much for the stock clutch. For some reason I had Brakes on the mind, as if I was spending that much, Brakes would have been on the list..

Fixed the original post, sorry about the confusion..

mods are worth $0 on the resale market. plain and simple.

take that car to any dealer, or have any dealer sell it. if selling to the dealer, they're going to give you official trade-in valuations. it doesn't matter if you spent $200,000, the market dictates that the value of the car is as equipped from the factory.

Not sure I agree. Clean mods using proven components like this build *can* have a value on the resale market. You're just vastly reducing the pool of potential buyers which makes a transaction less likely.

When you start using less... "standard" mods, you're sure you can kiss your mods money goodbye.

LOL at the offers he was getting at the time. 15k for a FI car is laughable today.

Mods are worthless to a dealer or when the car becomes a collector car.

However, the cars are starting to hit the 10 years old mark and there's a newer body model out... mods are the only thing that rationalizes a FRZ being over 15k.

Someone should tell the used car market this, because 10 yo cars are still selling for (or at least listed for) ridiculous prices..

Many Pre Face Lift 1st gens with high tens to twenties asking prices..

2014 Subaru BRZ Limited "KBB Great Price"

Used 2014 Subaru BRZ Limited

Used 2015 Subaru BRZ Premium w/ Popular Package

10 YO FR-S, admittedly low mileage, selling for what it did new

And here is a low mileage, modified 2014 for $30K

As everyone's been saying, it's probably sold and the user just logged off for good.

On the question of mods, personally, I look for stock or VERY close to stock cars. All of the brands/mods look legit, but you never know who does the install, did they torque everything down correctly, does everything mate up as it should, any rattles, etc.

Even at a minimum, when I see tunes, headers, superchargers, etc I know someone's been "enjoying" the car. IE, redlining, extra wear, etc. That's not all bad and I know, enjoy and drive the damn car, but it goes to show someone was not just using it to commute to work and back. Same goes for very track focused suspension, control arms....

Price-wise, you never get what you paid for mods. If he has $40k, he's probably not getting $10k extra on top of the car like he's asking. A 2015 supercharged 80k mile BRZ isn't worth pretty much what you can get a new 2023 for now (almost). I'd pay the extra and get an 8 year newer car with a warranty, and larger engine out of the box.

I think you're realistically looking more like $20-23k... AND needing to find a niche buyer.

i'm not entirely opposed to performance mods, but there better be receipts showing increased maintenance intervals to indicate the owner cared.

otherwise my first assumption is that the car was modded cheaply, ridden hard, otherwise forgotten about, and the reason for selling is that they messed something up that's now made the car into a hot potato they don't want to hold on to anymore.
