Toyota 86 RC model to go on sale in New Zealand

That's right folks, the stripped out "race competition" model is to go on sale in New Zealand. No prices yet but the base manual model with 16" wheels currently retails for NZD 42K (USD 34K - before anyone asks NZ has a 15% sales tax which is included in the price) so expectations are high the RC version will be nicely below the NZD 40K mark

Toyota New Zealand has announced a new model to the 86 line-up, adding a car that we all wanted them to have in the first place: the 86 RC, or “Race Competition” – a stripped-out entry-level model, ripe for customisation or conversion into a racing car!
Toyota says the 86 RC “gives Kiwi sports car fans the chance to create their own statement with a brand new Toyota 86 that arrives box-fresh and ready for customisation, at an incredibly low entry price.”

That clinches it for me. I'm a hardcore track day enthusiast and I was always going to put clubsport brakes, suspension and tires on any 86 I bought - the lower priced RC looks likely to make this exercise appreciably more affordable.

Thank you Toyota NZ and hats off to the guys and girls who pushed for this option especially in such a small market for Toyota

Not quite. The OZ GTS86 gets the touch screen head unit, where we get the plain one.

We don't really have a long waiting list, but then we don't have the pricing that Australia has either.

I have a motorsport certified DC2 Type-R and I have to say never again! Requires all sorts of certification, annual MSNZ certificate (and fee!), compulsory car club membership, and at least an hour at a testing station every time I go for a warrant of fitness because the nice people working there ask the same dumb questions and reject the car every f.cking time until I kick up and the manager gets involved and they pass it.

An RC without an MSNZ rollcage will do me - I'll cherry pick from TR86 parts - between MSNZ regs and charges and WOF idiots, as a track day hobbyist rather than a racer, I would never bother roading a race car ever again!

I was thinking of doing the same to my Type R. Did the research and found it to be a PITA so decided against it. Still had issues at VTNZ because my rear glass was factory tint and they thought it was tinted. To top it off they didn't even notice the adjustable suspension + cert.

It's because of my ITR that I decided on the GT86. I don't want another harsh ride for daily driving, but I still want fun for the weekends and track days. I think the GT86 is the perfect compromise for me, a bit of luxury while still being fun.

I'm glad they are bringing out the RC and the TR models, but I won't be buying them.

This is a confident, positive move, and really demonstrates that Toyota knows their target market and captures the model's spirit/ethos.

They save money in (ultimately unwanted) components and production processes, and pass those savings onto their customers.

Are there any other mass-produced makes/models which have done this before?

I completely agree - ground-breaking stuff in this part of the world - I'm not aware of another make or model hitting the Australasian market in my memory that included a road legal stripped out race base option. I believe that in the past 10 years Honda NZ have occasionally helped production class teams import race base type-r cars direct from factory in Japan but these were not road legal.

It would be nice if Toyota Australia would bring in the RC. Its the sort of car I would buy to go racing. Especially if it was under 25k. Since there is no on road costs etc.

the RC, the one i wanted has arrived! Here's another pic of the nz rc and tr models and the article. rumoured to be close to $35k NZD, quite a bit cheaper (current base model is $41) and right up my alley. too bad in the time since the 86 release, i put my money towards a house deposit instead.

anyway, i'm not sure why they specified the small boot spoiler, fog lamps and 16" alloys. hopefully they are just options because you'd want it as basic as possible.
