It slightly concerns me a rating of "acceptable". That does not represent "no significant bodily injury" as I read it.

I'd assume broken ankles at a minimum based on what I saw happening with the front wheel.

Keep in mind very very few cars are even doing this well on this specific test. It's a new test and the car is simply not engineered for it.

Still a top safety pick by the IIHS. We bought a new Forester specifically because it aced this test. I've seen maybe 20 different cars do the small offset test. The FRS did better than the majority of those cars.

I think the biggest cause of foot well incursion, which isn't that bad even then, is how the wheel didn't break. It put a lot of energy in down low. I bet a nice, cheap aftermarket rim would shatter, reducing the damage down there.

Look at how the Forester wheel collapses:

The steering wheel moved too far to the right. The side airbag doesn't cover far enough forward.

It did worse than I had hoped but as well as I expected.

Also, the test is said to apply to 2013 and onward models built after December 2013, which doesn't make any sense. I think they stopped building the 2013 models in mid-2013.

Just saw this as well! Was waiting for them to do the small overlap. Very impressed considering how other vehicles fail miserably. That FIAT makes me CRINGE... Fix It Again Tony....

yea I knew it was a new test...and every manufacturer got hit in the teeth with it. I just thought since 'racecar' they would take offset hit to the median into account haha.

No disrespect man but...

I cringe every time I hear Fix it Again Tony used to reference any Fiat cars built after 1990. That joke is about maintenance and reliability (not crash safety) from 3 decades ago. I'm old enough to know. Those cars are unrelated in every way but name to Fiat's current models.

...receive either marginal or poor ratings for the small overlap test. The small overlap is a relatively new test that is raising the bar for crash safety. The simple fact is, most cars older than 3-4 years old would fail this test miserably. That probably includes nearly car every person has ridden in during their lifetimes. In 2012 nearly all mid-size sedans "failed" this test.



Auto mfgs hadn't begun designing cars with the small overlap test it in mind until the last 3 years and it's going to be a while before cars of makes, models, and sizes can regularly "pass" this test. That btw is what makes the FR-S / BRZ's excellent performance so darn epic.

DAEMANO: I know what the joke was used for, my grandfather owned one and first auto tech teacher owned one and they have told many stories of the joy of ownership. However, I still don't consider it misuse or even mildly cringe-worthy to use the phrase in this setting. That car did not look structurally sound... Oh, FIAT also dominated the competition in a recent JD Power study.
