It's a niche car. It will not sell a large volume by itself. It will have a long product cycle though (as stated a few years ago by the players involved). Subaru will use the technology elsewhere to bring down development cost for all cars based on the new tech/lessons learned in the AS1 development (this happens with every new platform of course, the car that originally created the platform is often not intended to be a mass market car and the tech/platform filters into the mainstream cars in redesigns later).

It won't generate a new market, but will add Scion and Subaru to the compact sports car market, a market that both companies are currently not in. Well and Toyota overseas of course.

Oh and we have 3 weeks left until HOPEFULLY the companies involved will end this waiting game for us all. Why don't we just wait for the prices than we can have this discussion?

Sorry Hachi for letting the discussion get a bit out of hand.

OK, so let me start. Again, keep in mind I said "VERY UNLIKELY" as it does not go along with the conventional wisdom.

I do not have ANY positive evidence that Subaru wants really to make this a failure. Nobody would say that even if he/she did. However, if this does not generate much more sales while it has risks of cannibalization within the brand (no matter how "sophisticated buyers" such as you and longhorn say otherwise) or turning off some of the current loyalists, why would Subaru be overly enthusiastic to do this? Their bread and butter are Outback/Legacy/Imprezza and a bit of WRX/STI's. Somewhere someone else said Subaru eventually wants to be just completely a subsidiary of Toyota, but I do not have any written article. With that, I speculated a very small possibility of the scenario.

Speaking for all of the Subaru guys I know, they are all extremely excited about the car. The only complaints I've seen/heard of have come from some dealers, especially in the northwestern US where admittedly the car will likely do very poorly. Most of those complaints stem from a mix of things, some being the marketing they do for the snowy conditions ("We are 100% AWD yada yada yada") as well as their reluctance to train techs in the new vehicle and buy new specialty tools. The failure in their thought process on the training and tools is that obviously they'll need to do that anyways within a few years but they are too short-sighted to figure that out.

The marketing bit I can understand on a regional level, but I really can't see the impact of a random Subaru Outback owner saying "Wow. They have a non-AWD car now. Subaru is no longer my brand preference!" As long as the new Outback continues to make that random Outback owner happy they will upgrade without a second thought to the BRZ.

Some Subaru guys may buy the FR-S instead, and that's a potential loss of a customer but I'm not convinced that will happen anymore than it would if they never made the car.. if that Subaru owner wanted a compact RWD sports car Subaru would have had zero chance of keeping the customer before the BRZ came out, now they at least have a fighting chance of keeping that customer.

And with that I'm out for a bit. It's a nice low 70s day here and I need to work on the car

I think that's a very reasonable opinion. As you said, let's wait for the Toyota guys to come out with the prices.

I forgot about the spoiler.....also don't forget the leather alcantara seats too.

I am still sticking with

$26k BRZ limited

A birdie told me that the bare bones FR-S will be $22,995 plus fees/destination for a manual, another thousand more for the auto. Car manufacturers always release an anticipated car with a low base price for the first year, then jack it up. Expect the price to rise steadily each subsequent model year.

I think the gap between the FR-S and BRZ Premium will be ~$3k. The only reason I say this is because no one ever pays MSRP for Subarus. With Subaru's VIP pricing, you could probably grab a BRZ Premium for <$1k more than the FR-S if the gap is $3k.

FR-S $22k
BRZ Prem $25k
BRZ Limited $27k

Subaru BRZ should have been called the Subaru Impreza Coupe.

The mistake made by Subaru on the 08 WRX was fixed thanks to the amount of complaints.

We need to let them know what we think these cars should cost so I decided to make an official thread.

I personally don't think that these cars should be priced anywhere close to the WRX. The WRX includes AWD, a Turbo components, more doors, wider 17"wheels/tires which all add up to higher costs, and this is why I don't see the FRS and BRZ costing around the same.

I personally feel good/fair prices would be
$21k-$22k for the Scion
$22k-$23k for the Subaru.

Be reaslistic and post your price and comments.
that price would be nice!!! (scion)

GT86 - $105K

Hope it doesn't go pass that. Unfortunately, heard some rumours that it will cost $140K.
