I wont buy wheels that are over 18 pounds each. Ideally I want to get some in the 16 pound range hahahaha. IDK why I have this mind set that I need light rims, thats why I haven't got new ones yet .

I believe they make them in 17x9 +40 5x100 but I'm trying to look up the weight now..

the 17x7 weighs roughly 17 pounds

I too ran into something similar.

My first setup

Avid AV-20's Staggered

18x8.5 et33 245-40
18x9.5 et38 255-35

I loved the look but there was a definite difference in acceleration and the overall feel through corners. Being an idiot was easy, I could use both feet on the gas pedal through almost any turn but it wasn't as fun. I drove it like this for about a year until I found the coveted rpf1'z.

So I ended up going back to 17's.

17x9 et35 Square 245 40 Hankook evo2's. IMO I still have the grip and the ascetics I wanted without having sacrifice anything. I purchased the avid wheels because I couldn't afford what I wanted at the time. If given the chance I would wait and buy the wheels you want. Do it once and do it right.

Don't settle

These wheels are too heavy and too pricey for me to even consider. I spent just over 1k CAD and got wheels that weigh 16.8 pounds a piece for 17x9. Mind you, they aren't as pretty as some other wheels, but they're better value than many other wheels.

I probably wouldn't have said no to the deal you got either. Worst case you could probably flip them for a couple extra bucks.

17x9 RPF1's are under $1,100 USD shipped new from TireRack claiming 16 lbs. Doesn't help you much, but with tires I believe they come in just under 40lbs so a hair lighter than stock for the same money OP's talking.

Yeah, but 1100 USD equals over 1600 CAD. Not to mention the **** pain that's shipping and taxes on top of that. As it is with the wheels I ordered, I'll have paid around 1800 CAD all in for them with tires, mounting and balancing.

Edit: Doh, misinterpreted your post. Nothing to see here.

If RPF1s are barely lighter than stock... why does anyone spend the money to upgrade?(real question. I never looked it up before, I just assumed they were significantly lighter)

It's ~4 pounds lighter than stock despite being 2" wider. That's not insignificant. For more weight savings, 17x7-17x8s are also available.

Elaborating on the other two, you get a 245 wide tire on a 17x9 vs a 215 wide tire on a 17x7 for the same weight, if not slightly less on the RPF1's I believe. 17x8 and 17x7 RPF1's will both be lighter than the stock when combining wheels and tires.

i.e. this guy's 17x7's w/ 225 tires weighs in 2.8 lbs lighter than the stock 17x7 w/ 215's, another guy weighed in a bit heavier with different tires.

http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?p=818060

There are lighter wheels out there but the costs quickly start to climb into well over $2k a set for just wheels, meanwhile RPF1's will arrive with tires on your doorstep for under $2k. Honestly it speaks to how despite cutting corners in the 86 to keep costs down, the OE wheels aren't half bad.
