It is surprising that the mpg is so terrible for a 2.4 liter engine. My supercharged brz has better mpg.

Comparing what SavageGeese called out on their 2nd gen to my first gen AT. I realize its a bit apples to oranges, but like them I don't understand the huge difference between 2Gen and the 1Gen (and other cars they mentioned).

I'd lean more towards rpm at 85mph being a big factor in that meh mpg. I'd guess most people, mix driving and highway at 55-65mph will see mid to upper 20's.

Jack mentioned highway speeds of 80-85mph.
My gen one gets relatively crap mileage as well when I drive at those speeds. The manual gearing isn't optimal for a high speed cruiser. Also boxer life. I'm sure the MX5 probably spins around the same rpm but that engine is much more efficient.

70mph/110kmh is the sweet spot for me for mileage/speed.

As someone from Canada driving the car through a very cold winter my average fuel economy right now is at 23mpg. Majority of the winter I drove short distances in town, and my fuel economy was even worse. Now that summer is here I am driving more on the highway and the average mpg is improving. Driving on the highway at 70mph I do get about 30-33mpg which I guess aint that bad, but still from such a light 4 cylinder car I expected better fuel economy.

I can add this. Used to own a 2003 Chevy Cavalier, weights about the same as BRZ, 2.2 engine with 140hp, pretty ancient 4 speed auto (by todays standards). That thing could get 36mpg and better going 70. And that was almost 20 years ago. It did rev 2700 at those speeds from I remember compared to about 3000 on BRZ, but still you would think in 20 years there would be SOME advancements in technology

Recently got 36 mpg at 70mph with cruise control going to Baltimore. This was a 16 BRZ AT with header and tune.

This sounds like the most useful statement here. I get about 30mpg doing pretty much exactly what you do, on my 2018 BRZ. The difference sounds about right considering the displacement change.

The mpg varies SO MUCH with this car depending on how you drive it. I think that's the benefit of the car. You want take your sweet old time and get good mpg because you're doing hours of highway? You'll get good results. You want to blast it around and not care? Seems quite easy to get into low 20's or less from having a little fun, and that's on the first gen!

Don't forget there have been plenty of people on this forum that posted their averages back in the day for the first gen, and tons of them were in the low 20's.

Just take a look at fuelly! It places the new gen BRZ pretty much on par compared to any of the previous year BRZ's as you scroll down. It also has quite a bit of reported miles collected already, so it looks to be quite accurate.

It's wind resistance more than rpm. Wind resistance increases exponentially with speed.
