I traded in my 07 scion tC with upgraded wheels, system and it just shy of 100k and they gave me 7200$ so i wouldnt do that.... Maybe push them a little and see what they say or go to a diff dealership...

Oh and KBB gave me about 5-6k on the high end....

I had a really good trade in experience when buying my frs, i got $27,500 for my 2011 silverado and the kbb trade in value was around $26,000.... Not sure if the fact that a chevy dealership is right next door has anything to do with it or not lol

As some above have said, take it to Carmax for an appraisal offer, then make your dealer beat it. If you want the most cash though private sale is the only way to go. Carmax is good way to gauge what your car is worth to the dealers in your area though.

Well, I guess it all depends on what kind of car you are trading in. I actually got a great trade in value for my 2010 Toyota Tacoma Pre-Runner. At first, they low ball to 19k, but at the end, they were willing to give me a minimum value based on KBB trade-in of 23k for my Tacoma.

I didn't hesitant because I've bought the Tacoma 2 years ago for $25k before taxes.

Since most are suggesting doing a private sale... can you guys recommend the best way to do so? (autotrader, or somewhere else to list it). The tC was the first car I really bought on my own, and therefore will be the first I sell on my own... suggestions highly appreciated.

I agree.. Sell it privately. You can get more money, and somebody gets a care for a little less then a dealer.
This, dealers dont car about KBB. I checked on NADA and im not sure about your options but it places your car in the 8300-10200 range. I do agree with everyone else though, private party and use KBB, that way you'll get the most for your car.

I use CL but I have pretty thick skin and can filter out the junk buyers from real interested parties.. The key with CL is to price based on whats online.. if you are selling more features and better condition than other listed cars, nudge your price up.. Don't let people test drive until you've determined they are legit and I always tend to drive first to see how they react once on the road.. Sell the car when test driving.. tell them why you love it and bought it.. You are selling for a new purchase not cause the car is a beater... If you have extra stuff for the car (filters, oil) tell the buyer they get it all free... good luck and get max $$$$$

I had the same issue. I am trading in a practically new 2011 Eclipse GT. Loaded with every option the Eclipse came with as well as auto start. It also has Evo X BBS wheels in perfect condition. And the car only has 11K miles on it. They only offered me 17K for it and after trying to haggle for more I only got 17.5K for it. I know i could try to sell privately but most people who buy privately are not looking to buy a 2011. Plus I dont want to deal with the waiting and the backing out and everything that comes with selling a car for this much privately. I was really hoping for like 20K considering this car was a tad over 26K when they first came out. O well i guess...now i have the FRS.

The dealer is looking for maximum profits, so he's obviously low-balling you hard. Considering you said this is your first time buying or selling a vehicle, I'd say you are young. Being 19 years old I got the same sort of reactions from the salesman. They all had the general "Oh, he's just a kid we can walk all over him" attitude.

They offered me a measly $1,000 for my RSX, which was KBB valued at 7k fair. Total bull. I threw it up online and was getting offers for 8 grand after the ad was up for a single evening.

You should definitely try and sell your vehicle on Craigslist or post on classifieds. Also, look into joining a Scion or specifically tC forum, post in their Member classifieds. If it's as clean as you say, I'm sure it wouldn't take long to get a buyer.

1. private sale for your car.
2. kbb puts up numbers, but they don't buy or sell cars.
3. your appraiser was awfully close to what the actual current day value of the car is.

Private sale is the best .... if you have the time and patience with hagglers. I don't. With a trade ... you also have to factor in the reduced sales tax since the trade amount comes off the total cost. I know with my trade .... they started with one figure ... then came up after I "haggled".

I believe you get reduced sales tax if you sell your vehicle privately also.

We aren't really familiar with "winter" in Texas.

It would depend on the exact condition. You say excellent (which is basically equivalent to showroom condition) but it should be one notch down to "Very Good".

The market value for a used 08 tC in your area would also be considered. I think KBB takes it into an account, but dealers will have a better eye for that since we have access to auction sites.

The value of the car can also be affected based on similar auction car prices- ie why pay you more for a car if he can buy a similar car at the auction for less

So those would be the main factors. Based on a 08 tC with 45k in LA, we'd probably pay out about 9-10k assuming it needs little to no reconditioning.

So I think his value is pretty close to where it should be- but again, depends on demand for that particular car in your area.
