Couldn't find the plastic hole plug at Lowe's. Instead I just bought a rubber stopper (basically a rubber cork).

Shoved it in there... (Insert "That's what she said" joke), huge difference!!

I'm soo much happier now that the interior of my car doesn't sound like a video game. I can hear the engine and exhaust notes MUCH more clearly now..

This mod beat out the 2" blindspot mirror for the title of "Best Bang For The [literal] Buck!!"

I just used the plug/cover for the cigarette lighter in the glovebox - fits perfectly and spent $0. Packed the hollow end of the plug with a bit of cloth+tape to increase the sound deadening effect and now it no longer sounds like a wailing banshee.

For anyone having issues finding this item, it is located next to the metric hex bolts in the sliding drawers in the bolt and screw aisle.

After installation all of the noise I had been attributing to the road seemingly went away. My only complaint was solved by $0.65.

Thanks.

Hi all.

I posted this mod originally and just so pleased you are all enjoying it and just wanted to say thanks for all the "thanks" and positive comments I have been reading. I think it probably is the cheapest and easiest 86 upgrade possible and as you have all noticed it makes such a big difference.

Cheers.

I bought the bit from Home Depot, and it fit snugly in the hole. However the cabin sounds exactly the same. Anyone know what the deal is?

Have you driven it on the freeway? I think you'll notice the difference when your at highway speeds as the air helps push the sound through that tube into the cabin. I tried comparing the difference while parked and didn't notice any difference.

But at highway speeds, it's definitely noticeable

Yeah it's mostly noticeable when you are revving higher, that's the sound that gets cut out the most. Actually, drive with it on for awhile, then take it back off and you'll probably notice more.

To me the sound is more different than quieter. You get normal engine sound rather than the artificial induction sound.

You plugged some other hole? Beats me. Just bought and installed the plug from Lowe's last night. It was scary how little sound was left. It was a very effective and noticable difference.

I found some that fit perfectly at Canadian Tire. They were in the car section under "Panel Trim Fasteners" DORMAN is the name brand and the part number was 45092 and says "GM" in a yellow package.

Amazing thanks so much! i was going to ask where i can find something like that in canada

If you are not careful and do not double check the bit you grab from the drawer at H.D. you will sometimes get the incorrect size thanks to folk who throw their extras into whatever slot. So I would first check if you actually got the 7/8. Next I found that you need to seat the plug correctly in the sound pipe, if you do not the noise reduction is pretty much null/void. At first I thought I had it seated correctly, but a second attempt proved me wrong as it was flush with the carpet instead of being backed out a bit.

If all else fails, I can hand deliver my spare

lolz i'll check this afterwork today. Though i'm sure it's in correctly. I just pressed it all the way down (7/8") but considering what you've stated, might as well double check while the car is on.
