Highest mileage BRZ/GT86/FRS with valve spring recall
I'm curious about the amount of people who got the recall done and did not get a catastrophic failure resulting in a blown engine. I'm also curious about who has the highest mileage done after the recall. I got my brz in february and brought it to my local Subaru dealer to get a few things fixed and they mentioned the free valve spring recall so I figured why not and had it done.
This was before I read up on all the catastrophic failures that had happened. Since then, I've put nearly 6000kms on my car with normal driving and hard driving from time to time with not much issues. I just want to know if I have a ticking time bomb or if a bunch of people have driven with the recall with no issues. Thanks! |

It’s really hit and miss. Either they put the timing cover on right and scrape the old silicone off correctly or they don’t. It’s Russian Roulette.
I made it 3,000 miles. I think for those that drive conservatively have a better chance of not having issues. Mine went exiting T5 at Laguna Seca |

Mine was completed on 1/15/2019 with 136,305 miles/219,362km on the odometer.
I now have 181,718 miles/292,447km with no issues. As @TommyW says, it was either done correctly (as most were) or it wasn't.

Impressive mileage! How was it driven and maintained? Track use? OCI?
Thanks. Quote:

That's because the vast majority of the '13 model year were Toyotas. In the US, there were 11,417 2013s sold vs 4,144 Subarus.

Standard maintenance based more or less on the schedule, except spark plugs which were done at the time of the recall. More details in my owner's journal.

If you are really concerned either you or your favorite mechanic could drop the the oil pan and check the screen for "debris". There are photos on here of a bad one, but basically your mechanic will go "oh, what the hell" as soon as she sees it if it's bad.

Do you think I'd see metal debris if I'd cut open the oil filter? If it was indeed failing that is.

The majority of the ones that failed do so within a thousand miles. If there is enough material blocking oil flow you are not going to get far before things go bad. It isn't a gradual wear situation but a rapid and catastrophic one. I would not worry much after about that thousand mile mark. Not to say it couldn't happen but the probability is strong that it will not. The only true way to check is (which has been mentioned) to pull the pan and check for silicone pieces. Checking the filter won't substitute for that since they are so big they don't even make it that far.
