If I simply recalculate the prices with our taxes in Belgium it would be like.. €27k starting price up to €30k

That would be nice! But offcourse.. it won't be

There was this thread before Xmas talking about the price in the Netherlands, maybe they're prices are a bit closer to your own?

Sometimes cars in Portugal have a less powerful engine.

It´s going to be the cheapest sports car on sale in Portugal

Thanks Toyota

I agree that cars’ prices in Portugal are absurd, however the price of the golf gti is wrong, that's the price of the golf r. Also the prices you posted were from high-end versions of the cars, i think you should have referenced that...
golf gti(210hp): 41000€
golf r(270hp): 53000€
Corolla SD 2.0 D4-D Exclusive: 33000€
mini Clubman JCW: 38000€
audi RS3 Sportback quattro Stronic(340hp): 69000€
TT RS Roadster 2.5 TFSI quattro(340hp): 80000€
Cheapest Camaro(v8 432hp): 93000€

In Portugal the taxes penalize displacement and co2 emissions, as for the autofoco’s speculated price, it might be possible but might be a little higher than that. Here’s another reference:
peugeot RCZ 1.6 THP 200 34000€

Hyundai Genesis Coupé(2.0 210hp) ~41000€
The genesis coupe is a nice reference, because it offers the same displacement, but since it has a "old" 2 litter with high co2 emissions(220 g/km) it suffers from high tax values. If the toybaru has similar base price, it will definitely be cheaper because o its probable significantly lower emissions...

Whatever, if the Toyota starts at a baseprice between the Clio RS and the Megane RS in EU, this means 26.000 €, it is a very good thing.

Thanks, I didnt see that one come by. Like he says they have 'mad car taxes' so its not really relevant because I dont know exactly how their taxes are calculated. However the post about prices in Germany a few down is more realistisc!

"Well, i think this is good news...
because the genesis coupe 2.0T starting at 27000€ (in Germany), so if the GT 86 will be 2000€ less expensive than the Hyundai or for instance the Golf GTI, i will be more than happy"

Tomorrow the 'Autosalon' starts in Belgium.. Alot like the Detroit autoshow. However multiple sources have confirmed that it will be the GT86 CONCEPT version that will be displayed.. Sucks! However.. I will try to find a salesman who actually knows stuff about the car (Not evident) and ask about a price..

The GT86 has to be compared with the benchmark: Mazda MX-5 2.0.
Nothing else. The Genesis is a fat pig that only makes sense in the US. Here, no one cares about it because it´s rivals are so much better. A Hyundai as the same brand value as a washing machine or an oven.

So, let´s compare the displacement + power + co2 + price with the real competitor
Mazda MX-5 price and specs in PT:

1.8 Exclusive Plus - 167gr/co2 - 31.479€
2.0 Sport - 181gr/co2 - 36.849€
http://www.mazda.pt/showroom/mx-5/specs

Displacement is the same as the 2.0 and CO2 is below the 1.8 engine. So we could expect a price under 35.000€ but I don´t believe they would go that way… big profit will be on their minds. My guess is that they will probably match the MX-5 2.0 price. More than that will be Scirocco league...

The BRZ won´t be up for sale, so there isn´t competition from Subaru. The GT86 could sell under 35.000€

I hope the Toyota distributor looks to:
Peugeot RCZ - 200hp THP - 34.000€
BMW 120i - 170hp – 35.500€
BMW 120D – 177hp - 36.900€
Renault Mégane RS - 250hp – 37.500€

… and market the GT86 under 35.000€

(35,000.00 EUR = 44,702.42 USD
1 EUR = 1.27721 USD 1 USD = 0.782955 EUR)

Now you are seeing it...the closest competitor is the BMW 1 series. Not the 2 seat roadster MX5. If you think about it...the Toyota 86 has no competitors.

Genesis Coupe is closer competitor than 1er. Price gap is much too big for 1er.

You are correct tripjammer.

Although in our market the GT86 will be used the same way as the MX-5. No one uses the MX-5 on a daily basis for the same reason as the GT86... petrol.

The 4 seats makes sense in your market and I understood it but around here is the diesel engines that matters for a daily use. S2000, ITR, Impreza´s etc are weekend cars.

The last Celica or MR-2 were own, when new, by people over 35/45years old.
An example to make it more sense:

Nissan 350Z
Fuel capacicty: 76 Liters (20 gallons)
Price of petrol: 1.64€ www.maisgasolina.com/postos/lista/c154
Cost of a full tank: 76 X 1.64 = 125€ (160 USD)

What stops me from getting a 370Z is not the lack of back seat but the poor MPG. FRS's BIG selling point as a sports are to me is the 30+ mpg number.
